Orienteerimg is a sport of land navigation which originated in Scandinavia in the late 1800's. Maps and compasasses are used by participants to navigate over unfarmiliar terrain on and off of established trails by way of running, walking, skiing, or even mountain biking. The participants must use their abilities in physical fitness, map reading, compass usage, mental visualization, descision making, and leadership to locate a series of control points shown on a map. By participation in this activity, the above abilities are honed and participants are involved in environmental awareness. Orienteering is a highly competitive race to find as many control markers along a self sought route in the least amount of time, which requires mental decisiveness, speed, acuracy, and endurance, on the part of each participant. Ski Orienteering has been an Olimpic sport since 1949. Learn more at the United States Orienteering Federation's web site
